News: How iPad Affects the Way we Design Websites?

The iPad has received mixed reviews. While the geeks (people like you and me) have looked at it with disdain for being “just” what we expected, the media publishing industry (read print media) has seen it as the salvation they had been waiting for. Whether the iPad is able to change the world or not, is not the issue of this article. But the fact of the matter is that it is here and sooner or later we need to learn to design the web keeping it in our minds. So what are the things we need to consider?

Fluid Width Design

The iPad has no RIGHT way of viewing websites. That means you can view it either in landscape or in the portrait mode. But for the designer that means two completely different layouts for which to design. It is for this specific reason that the iPad highlights the need for smart fluid width design. Using a smart combination of CSS and Javascript the User Experience can be made to improve drastically.

It is time for designers to get their skills together for designing for the iPad is going to be a roller coaster. While Fluid layouts are the best bet, but there are many instances where we just cannot use them. In such cases, we need to look beyond them to the basic styling.

A prominent option would be to use multiple CSS styles for different configurations and devices. Another is going for an adaptive content that changes according to the screen resolution.

There is NO Fold: Vertical or Horizontal

The iPad establishes one thing for certain. The website need not look the same on every platform. We have gone on to include Style Sheets for iPhone to include mobile devices, now we need to include them for iPad to keep in view the No Fold Policy.

In Portrait mode a very good portion of the website can be seen at one go. At the same time in the landscape mode the touch interface makes it very natural to browse sites that display content horizontally.

Links and Hover Effects

Primary method of user interaction with the iPad is and will be the fingers. The users will interact with our websites using fingers. So all those brilliant hover effects that were favorable for pointer-based devices, will be a hurdle in user experience on the iPad.

Also the links can no longer be concealed in a text and left for the user to dexterously click upon it. We might want to resize the links so that the user experience does not suffer.

Flash & HTML5

While the world has been divided over Apple’s stand on doing away with Flash, we need to understand that the step in the direction has already been taken. With Google openly adopting HTML5 for Youtube, it is only a beginning of the things to come with HTML5.

As designers we need to understand this paradigm shift and devote our efforts in not only learning about HTML5 but at the same time doing away with Flash. I understand that is a bold statement to make. But answer this:

“Would you rather have a Blue Lego?”

Conclusion...

While a lot of hidden points can be further raised 9 (Issues like typography, and webkit) I think the article serves as a good and sufficient point for the discussion to begin. I would love to hear your views on how exactly Apple’s iPad changes the way we design websites.

Grown | In my life and career being grown – in the sense of maturing – has always been a key factor. I can be a super clown at times due to always being young at heart, but having gained the wisdom on the balance needed, knowing when to focus and see straight, being ‘Grown’ is a great tool to have. I would also say that my music production has also matured like a fine wine, a prime example that quality takes time look at Dr. Dre for an example. I wouldn't feel comfortable pushing out my music that I made a few years ago for the listener to hear and think hmmm (in saying that, some of my dopiest beats that I have now were started a few years ago... So I guess I took my time in making them. Phew, can you say "what a save?!") All joking aside, I have grown as a person, and I have grown musically, my knowledge has grown due to being more active within music industry and the technical aspect of production.

Sexy | Boy! What's sexy to me is the new MPC5000! Jeezz! Erm... Sexy? What is sexy? Who is sexy? Sex to me relates to people so what I find sexy in a female, apart from the obvious, would be having a sense of ambition, knowledge of ones self to achieve their life’s goals. Just don't be singing "Independent woman" and then say "Can you buy me a drink or pay for my movie ticket, and popcorn?!" Ha! Don't get me wrong I'm not cheap but, c'mon son! [Ed Lover] but enough about the women, lets get back to talk about music, and more importantly equipment! MPCCC, Mini Moog, SSL Desk!! *foaming at the mouth like homer*

Funky | "Show me, how you get down, I said swearrrr dooowwnnn!" That's one of the genres [Funky House] that sometimes gets me zoned out. Don't know if I would do a House track, but I may take some of its influences such as the drum patterns, or the BPM, but on the whole not really my bag baby. I say that to say this: Get in where you fit in (cheers snoop) I don't hate on dudes hustle if your more successful in one genre than another, more power to you. Donaeo is an example of that. What's also 'funky' are them James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Jimmy Hendrix joints! When sampling, these old school records can be a driving force in doing something different and creative for me. Chuuch!

Fresh | "Fresh, fresh like I'm wrapped in plastic!" Big Sean lyric, as an artist he's fresh. Bape clothing is fresh, LRG clothing is fresh, Kicks fresh out of the box are with out a doubt are always fresh! A Jay Dilla Beat on repeat is super fresh! What's refreshing is, being able to do what you love for a career and have a support system for your family through that. Fresh, chuuch. (Any of the brands mentioned in this interview want to hook a brother up with some free gear, you more than welcome!)

Grown | My view of Grown is my understanding of music and its concepts, teaching workshops, and mentoring. Relationships; appreciation of my own personal loved ones, people I respect and hold dear - my nearest and dearest, people whom I feel compelled to help or make their lives beautiful as well. Understanding the reason behind gaining and losing friends and family, looking at other countries foods and traditions, developing patience with people... as they're just only... well, people! The jingle of children's laugher. An adult’s happiness, whether it be through simple words, poetry, rap, spoken word or though composed music. I’ve become more independent and now have faith in myself, my ability, my experiences and my understanding of trust, love and life. Plus I ‘Over-stand’ that I am still learning and growing in what I feel to be the right direction and with all stated above factors, and others which I've forgotten! I have sooo enjoyed the journey thus far, let’s keep on keeping on making it happen through rapping.

Sexy | Other than intelligence, music knowledge, nope, wisdom, having a feel for various genres, closed eyes, smiles and knowing, seeing the patterns in music and Hip Hop history, these are all factors that to me are sexy. Someone that’s able to make me laugh. Being able to draw positive energy from the people I have around me. Bringing joy, peace and goodness to any place that I may be at. Writing creative magic, be it art or sound. Having a vision, keeping it in view. Playing basketball (Very well!). Bald Heads and dark skin; but I haven't ruled out other races - Freddy Ljungberg and Jason Statham will always come second to Morris Chestnut and Idris Elba. And then there are the hips, you know, that area between the chiselled torso and the waist… Damn! Men with braids and neat - stress being upon the word neat - locks, but only if they groom daily and smell like either ‘Amen’, ‘Cool Water’ or ‘Joop’. Only then will I want to lick your face and bite your neck in public! The downside to that one of those dreams though is most guys with braids tend to get their hair done by Ex-Girlfriend’s and Baby Mama’s, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just slightly off the mark for me like a person who makes comparisons of Basketball and Netball. Even with Draughts and Chess, loads of fun, just a different game altogether. Conversations that are spiritual, emotional, thoughtfully deep, imaginational enough to stir me to gasps of amazement, that’s sexy! Those windows to your soul as well as the light of your word i.e. beautiful eyes and teeth. Finally, men who love their Mothers and family and those that have a craft, skill or a passion. I really could go on and on!

Funky | Jazz Funk, Parliament/Funkadelic, George Clinton, guitars, afros. I love live music and the energy it creates and bestows onto the attentive listeners. My personalised electric green Puma boots, as no one else has them! On that note, originals are always funky. Festivals. Seeing B-Boys and B-Girls express themselves through street dance. Eating a cider apple ice-lolly while walking through Waterloo on a sunny day listening to World Music being played. Where is summer when you need it?! And now the negative side of funky; ignorance. Self conceited people. The same people that work hard at making money out of other peoples hard work in an insincere way. People who ‘talk-about-it' but never 'be-about-it'. Those people who try to act professional, but all that they want to do is exploit or just sleep with you. But enough said about the negative vibes.... back to the positive! I love hair - different styles different colours. People who don’t follow fashion but take lead. Yeah that’s funky! Peacock feathers, bright bigger than-your-smile earrings. Co-ordinated trainers and t-shirts for guys in summer. Five colour nail polish; a trend that I thought I started but what can you say. I know I started the blue hair and 1 side shaved look though! Dancing until the lights go on and not caring how you look as long as the move moves you, all funky!

Fresh | Recording, finishing, mixing my album in Atlanta, GA with Daz-I-kue of Bugz In The Attic and BB Boogie's hardworking soul and feeling good about the completed mission. Positive input & support from friends Allison, Severine, Doris, Caroline, Leyla, Dúbb’l yoo T, Leroy Brown, J, Abdul Shyllon, Andrea Clarke & Chocolate, Bunny B, Adam Rock, to mention a few; the nocturnally nourished ones who have kept me whole on a daily basis. Just having great people involved during that time step-by-step and on adjoining projects with Phil Asher, AC Layne, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Octavio Santos, Heidi Vogel, DJ Zulu, Nathan G, Adam Rock of Uprock, Drew Horley, Kevin Mark Trail, Aroop Roy who all remind me of how truly honored I am to know you all. Insa vs Marks and Spencer, Partnas in Rhyme's 'Rum Punch' vs Apples and Snakes' 'Rum, Punch and Poets' and I'm sure they're many many more... I'm sure these companies must think we should be grateful/flattered for them using our styles, yes those are a few of the shared emotions. But to not give the artist a credit, a mention because someone within there organization had run out of ideas.

If you have not heard of Ms Georgia – pass works included working with Erykah Badu on her 'New Amerykah: Part One' and with Mos Def on his resent 'Ecstatic' album among others - this album is a perfect way to start exploring her library of work. These songs, all written and produced by Georgia herself, were recorded between the ages 17-19, and show how at such an early stage in her music journey, how incredibly talented this young woman would blossom into the artist she is today.

This profoundly beautiful collection of songs is a soulfully lucid and warm expression of true artistry, genuine emotional observation and reflection. 'Early' is a great opener for the uninitiated, and an engagingly welcome addition for those who have already embraced Ms Muldrow's work up to now. A truly incredible album.

Literature: Reduce Your Level of Insecurity at Work

Creative professionals, entrepreneurs, and anyone else trying to make a name for him or herself has likely spent repeated amounts of time checking their website's analytics, googling their name, reviewing their email alerts, their twitter search results, and even things like their bank account balance and sales data. Come on, admit it. You know you check some of this stuff a little too often. While all of this information is arguably important, none of it requires such constant review. In fact, much of this information could be revisited every few days or even weekly.
Nevertheless, we have the tendency to revisit this data constantly. Why? After multiple conversations about this phenomenal and instinctual time-sink (and some introspection), I have come to realize that a very human sense of insecurity is at the core of this behavior.

Quite simply, I have come to define "Insecurity Work" as stuff that we do that (1) has no intended outcome, (2) does not move the ball forward in any way, and (3) is quick enough that you can do it multiple times a day without realizing - but, nonetheless, puts us at ease.

While I am sure that there has always been a tempt for people to spend their time on insecurity work, new technology and ubiquitous online access has made it easier now than ever before. Data that COULD make you feel more at ease is now always at your finger tips. Much like a drug that promises instant gratification. And therefore, we always have a desire to access it - again and again. Why? Because, deep down inside, we are always wondering what we are missing. We want to feel safe.

The antidote to the addiction of insecurity work is a combination of awareness, self-discipline, and delegation.

(1) The first step is to recognize what you do in your everyday life that is, in fact, insecurity work. Whether it is googling the same search terms again and again or constantly checking your email inbox as if it were a boiling pot of water - develop a sense of self-awareness.

(2) The second step is to establish some guidelines and rituals for yourself. Allow yourself a 30 minute period at the end of every day (or, if you dare, every week) where you can go through the list of things you're curious about. Perhaps make all of these things bookmarks in a browser that you don't normally use - and only open it when allowed!

(3) The third step, if applicable to you, is to delegate the task of checking on this data to a less insecure colleague who can review the data in moderation. The colleague should be told to review the data daily and - only when necessary - tell you when something is wrong.

The purpose of reducing your amount of insecurity work is to free up your mind, energy, and time for generating and taking action on ideas. Insecurity work threatens to weigh us down and prevent us from escaping the never-ending ticker of what the world thinks. To envision what will be, you must remove yourself from the constant concern of what already is.
